Food Drive and Holiday Spirit Day!

LKS will be taking part in a Second Harvest Food Drive this month...
Collections will begin December 3 and end on the 14th. There will be a class weigh in on December 17th after which our donations will be picked up. All PACKAGED and NON-PERISHABLE foods are acceptable. Thank you in advance for giving generously!

"Holiday" Day will be on December 14th. Students can dress up as something that represents good holiday spirit and/or perhaps symbolizes what their families celebrate at this time of the year. Have fun with this but remember the children still need to be able to work/move freely and safely to take part in their regular daily activities!

November 15/07

All grade three classes have completed a unit of study on Magnets in Science this term. The next science unit will be Energy - Forces and Movement that will take us into January.

The math program has picked up speed with the children having completed a unit on data management, number counting and patterns. Adding and subtracting and learning how to regroup will be worked on throughout the year. You can help your child at home by encouraging counting practise by 2's, 5's, 10's, 25's and 100's and memorizing easy math facts. This is an important skill as they gear up to learn multiplication in term two. We will begin 'Mad Minute' math drills soon.

Work on place value continues. Please assist your child with their homework by reading the 'Quick Review' in their take home book.

All teachers will stress to the kids that they must show their answers with pictures, numbers and words. They will be increasingly required to speak about their math and explain why they chose their answers.

In Language, the teachers are now working on paragraph writing and following that, letter writing.

We are very lucky to have Ms. Olson and Ms. Bradshaw's classes able to participate in the emersion program at Pioneer Village this year. Pioneer Village will only take a limited number from each school for this program and the other classes will have an opportunity to participate next year. Parents should now be preparing the costumes for their children.

Report cards go home on the 26th, with interviews on the 29th and 30th. See you then.

Interview Times

A meeting was held at lunch today to organize interview times for Thursday, November 29 and Friday, November 30, using the information provided on your request sheets and in coordination with teachers that siblings may have. Unfortunately, if we did not receive a request sheet from you we have scheduled you in any available spot. Your child is bringing home your confirmation of date and times, please be sure to make note of it. Thanks!

reading!

Reading continues to be our main homework piece as it is the only way to build sight word vocabulary, comprehension and inferencing skills... as well as fluency and expression. You may know that the younger grades are using a site called www.readinga-z.com to access small, levelled, at-home readers on the internet; what you may not realize is that there are books suitable to grade three readers also...check it out!
